Protein Molarity Formula
The formula to calculate protein molarity (PM)
Protein Molarity = (protein concentration) / (protein molecular weight)
Units used in protein molarity calculator
Molarity
- M = Molar = moles per liter (mol/L)
- mM = millimolar = millimoles per liter (mmol/L)
- um =micormolar = micromoles per liter (umol/L)
Molecular Weight
- Da = daltons = gram per mole (g/mol)
- kDa = kilodaltons = 1000 da = 1000 g/mol
Protein Concentration
- mg/ml = milligrams per milliliter
- ug/ml = micrograms per milliliter
- ng/L = nanograms per liter
How to calculate protein molarity
Calculating protein molarity requires two pieces of information
- Protein concentration: This is typically given in milligrams per milliliter (mg/mL), micrograms per milliliter (µg/mL), or nanograms per microliter (ng/µL).
- Molecular weight of the protein: This is the mass of one molecule of the protein, in Daltons (Da).
Protein concentration divided by molecular weight (da) of protein then you get protein molarity
Solved Example
Example – A solution of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with a concentration of 10 mg/mL. The molecular weight of BSA is 66,430 Da. then calculate the bsa protein molarity
Given values
- Concentration of BSA = 10 mg/ml
- The molecular weight of BSA = 66430 Da
Protein molarity = (10mg/ml) / 66430 Da = 0.150534 mM
