Free online class width calculator – quick and easy way to calculate the class width of datasets, enter maximum values, minimum values and number of classes then click the calculate button.
Class Width Formula
The formula for calculating the class width:
Class Width = Range of Data / n
- Range of Data = The difference between the maximum and minimum values in the dataset = Maximum value – Minimum values
- n = Number of classes
How to calculate class width?
To calculate the class width for a datasets, you can follow these steps:
Step1 – Find the Range of the Data = Maximum value – Minimum value
Step2 – Determine the Number of Classes = n
Step3 – put all values in formula = Range of data / n
Solved Problem
Example- A dataset of exam scores for a class of students: 62, 75, 82, 88, 95, 67, 72, 90, 78, 85, 93, 68, 75, 80, 87, 92, 76, 81, 89, 94
Given,
Maximum value = 95, Minimum value = 62
Range of data = Maximum number – Minimum number = 95 – 62 = 33
Number of classes = n = 5 (let)
Class width = Range of data/number of classes = 33 / 5 = 6.6
